Hyderabad, June 18

Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC) is planning to develop a biotech Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Hindupur in Anantapur district.

The SEZ, to come up on 70 acres, will be developed by Bengaluru-based developer Salarpuria as a world-class hub for biotech companies.

Based on a successful model of biotech cluster created in Genome Valley on the outskirts of Hyderabad, APIIC is aiming to attract Bengaluru-based biotech companies to the proposed SEZ in Hindupur which is in close proximity to the new Bengaluru International Airport, according to a release.

The proposal for the SEZ was formally approved in the board of approvals meeting of the Government of India recently. Another Biotech/ Life Science Park is also being set up over 100 acres in Lepakshi Knowledge Hub in Chilamathur area, about 70 km from Bengaluru Airport on Hyderabad-Bengaluru NH-7.

Besides, a biotech SEZ for livestock/animal biotech sector is being developed by APIIC in Pulivendula, Kadapa district, adjacent to the Indira Gandhi Centre for Advanced Research on Livestock (IGCARL), coming up there.

“This SEZ is suitable for export-oriented animal biotech projects and R&D for Zoonotic diseases, such as swine flu, avian flu, etc. Two leading US-based companies are already setting up their units in the SEZ,” APIIC said.

In addition, another 50-acre SEZ is being developed in the Genome Valley with a focus on biopharmaceutical manufacturing, the release added.
