Haldia dock strike may be called off

Our Bureau

Kolkata, June 24

The four-day strike by contractor workers of Haldia dock is likely to be called off shortly, according to dock sources. A section of the strikers, particularly those engaged in loading and unloading, is believed to have agreed to resume work.

“They have not resumed yet but the indication is that they will do so today itself,” said a spokesman for Haldia dock.

He, however, pointed out that those engaged in unloading of iron ore from railway wagons and trucks would most probably join tomorrow (Thursday) or day after.

Wednesday being Ratha Yatra (chariot festival at Puri) day, many workers were not immediately available for work. It is, however, not yet clear if the employers have conceded all the demands of the strikers.

The assurance has been given to settle the issues in dispute — higher pay and better facilities — within this week, it is learnt.
