Sporadic rains in AP revive farmers’ hope

Our Bureau

Hyderabad, June 28

After being elusive for nearly a month, southwest monsoon seems to have become active over Andhra Pradesh, giving hope to the farmers. Sporadic rains were reported in some parts of the State.

The farmers were a worried lot because there was a deviation (deficit) of 49 per cent in rains, with monsoon turning inactive. However, rains, though sporadic, in the last few days have revived hope.

“In fact, there is no need to worry at all. Sowings would generally continue till July-end. As of now, sowings are 74 per cent normal. The recent rains are an indication that there would be enough rainfall in the next few weeks,” a senior Agricultural Department official said.

As against normal sowings in 10 lakh hectares, the State witnessed seven lakh hectares. Though it was still a deficit, the official felt that likely rains in the coming weeks could make up for the losses.

As on June 24, nine paddy-growing districts registered a deficit (of rain) in the region of 60-99 per cent. The two-day District Collectors’ Conference, which concluded here on Saturday, took note of the situation.

Damage

While lack of rains posed a threat to kharif sowings, hailstorms caused damaged to crop in 25,000 hectares in the State. This includes 8,816 ha under horticultural crops.
