Food Security Law on anvil: K.V. Thomas

Our Bureau

Kochi, June 29 Prof K.V. Thomas, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Consumer Affairs, has said the Government is giving final shape to a Food Security Law, which is a first of its kind in the world.

Speaking at the reception accorded to him by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he said the various issues pointed out by the agri-related trade associations required detailed discussions for finding commonly accepted solutions.

The Centre plans to have a permanent agri-produce exhibition at Maradu’s Agricultural Urban Wholesale Market.

Steps are also afoot to organise a high-level symposium with the participation of senior government officials and delegates from all parts of the country during the ensuing Onam festival for giving a facelift to the agricultural sector with particular thrust on productivity.

The Minister announced that the Cochin Fisheries Harbour at Thoppumpady would be modernised at Rs 10 crore.

Port row

On the sporadic interruptions in the Kochi Port operations, he said a concerted effort is the need of the hour to avoid a situation of questioning the very existence of this prestigious major port.

He also called upon the chambers of commerce and other voluntary organisations to come forward to play their respective roles in keeping this port city beautiful and hygienic in all respects.

The chamber President, Mr Anilkumar N. Prabhu, sought the Minister’s help for setting up a full-fledged Maritime University campus in Kerala to facilitate maritime studies and research to focus on emerging areas such as like marine science and technology.
