Israel offers tech help in farming

Hyderabad June 29 A seven-member trade delegation from Israeli on Sunday expressed the country’s keen desire to transfer technology to India that would help shore up production of agriculture products, especially pomegranate.

A MoU was signed between the Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FAPCI) and the Israel-India Chamber of Commerce in Hyderabad to promote trade, investment, technical and scientific cooperation.

The Israeli delegation pointed out that although India’s coverage under pomegranate was about 122,000 hectares, the largest in the world followed by China with 85,000 hectares, the domestic yield rate was relatively poor.

Dr Dan Rymon, CEO of Pomeg-Tech Ltd, a member of the Israeli delegation, pointed out in an interactive session with FAPCI members that Israeli’s coverage under pomegranate was hardly 2,100 hectares. While the yield rate in India was between 7 and 10 tonnes a hectare, the yield in Israel was between 35 and 45 tonnes, he said.

Israel was keen on participating in joint ventures with Indian companies to transfer technology, including in the areas of post-harvest losses, efficient storage and mechanical handling of the raw material, which would shore up the yield of pomegranate in India.

Mr Raviv Byron, Chairman of the Israel-India Chamber of Commerce, said there was a lack of new technology in agriculture in India, though there was availability of large masses of land. “Israeli has witnessed significant development in agriculture due to introduction of new technology. The same technology can be transferred to India,” he said.

Mr Ar. Sukumar, Commissioner of Food Processing and Commissioner and Director of Agricultural Marketing, Government of Andhra Pradesh, said Israel was strong in agriculture technology and these technologies can be adopted in India for improving product quality, contributing to higher profits.
