Compulsory marriage registration

Chennai, June 30

The Tamil Nadu Government is to enact a law providing for the compulsory registration of all marriages of persons of various communities. The Minister for Public Works and Law moved the Bill to provide for compulsory registration of all marriages in the State of Tamil Nadu. The Act is to be called the Tamil Nadu Registration of Marriages Act 2009. The statement of objects and reasons says the proposed law is in line with a Supreme Court order (Seema Vs Ashwani Kumar AIR 20 06 SC 1158). This observes that the effect of non-registration would be that the presumption, available from registration of marriage, would be denied to a person whose marriage is not registered.
