Centre invites unions, SBI, associates for talks

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, July 1 The Centre has invited the bank unions and the management of State Bank of India (SBI) and its associate banks for conciliatory talks on July 3.

This move is seen as an effort to avert the strike called for on July 6 by six bank unions in all the SBI associate banks. The proposed strike is to protest against consolidation attempts or proposals of the SBI.

Recently, the SBI board had cleared a proposal to acquire State Bank of Indore, which is the smallest associate bank in the SBI Group.

Assurance sought

“Unless there is a categorical assurance from the SBI management that they will not go ahead with their consolidation attempts, we will not withdraw our strike. There is also a plan to hold a dharna in the Capital on July 3,” Mr C.H.Venkatachalam, General Secretary of the All-India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA), told Business Line.
