Trade & Labour Unions Web Extras - Shipping/Ports Haldia dock strike continues Our Bureau Kolkata, July 1 The acting Chairman of Kolkata Port Trust, Mr Anindo Majumdar, and two senior port officials on Wednesday called on the West Bengal Chief Secretary and apprised him of the situation at Haldia dock. Manual handling of cargo at the dock has remained suspended for the past few days due to a strike by contractors’ workers. The port officials expressed their helplessness at ending the strike, pointing out that the strikers were not employees of the port but of private contractors engaged by the port authorities.
The Chief Secretary, Mr A.M. Chakraborty, reportedly told the port officials that he would ask the District Magistrate to hold a meeting of the strikers and their employers at the earliest to resolve issues. Port sources described as baseless reports in a section of the media that ESMA might be invoked to break the strike. There was no such plan, the sources made it clear, pointing it out that the Shipping Ministry too had been apprised of the situation at the dock. On Wednesday, work proceeded as usual in seven vessels at the mechanical berths – such as oil jetties, iron ore berth and container berths. No work was undertaken in 11 other vessels berthed at the dock. The number of vessels waiting outside the dock was 23. More Stories on : Trade & Labour Unions | Shipping/Ports
