Coimbatore, July 2 Small and medium enterprises account for 33 per cent of the country’s exports. But this constitutes just 10 per cent of their total output and SMEs should make conscious efforts to upgrade technology and quality to help increase their exports, according to Mr Rajiv Yadav, Executive Director, India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO), New Delhi.

Mr Yadav did not agree with the perception that India is in the midst of recession and said the country is expected to register an 8 per cent growth during the current year.

Inaugurating the International Industrial Trade Fair (INTEC 2009) at Coimbatore on Thursday, Mr Yadav said SMEs should improve product quality and adopt latest technology. Once this happens, the products would acquire a competitive edge and the share of exports in their total output would go up significantly.

Mr Yadav said that India opened up its economy in early 1990s, “which has given good dividends”. India has to choose a balanced mix of planned-economy and free-market economy for its future. Narrating his own experience of air travel, he said India’s low cost airlines were luxury carriers compared to the low cost airlines of the US. Disputing reports about economic slowdown in India, Mr Yadav said that ITPO could not accommodate the requests for space allotment by intended participants in a recent printing technology exhibition organised by it due to huge demand.

Dr P. Umanath, Coimbatore District Collector, said the Government and the district administration were aware of the significance of the role of industries in the overall economy of the State and assured that that “we put our best foot forward to protect your interests and safeguard your future during this difficult time”.

Mr K. Ilango, President, Codissia, said every downturn was an opportunity for the future and urged the people to capitalise on it.

Mr V. Sundarrajulu, Chairman, INTEC 2009, said more than two lakh visitors were expected to visit the fair being held from July 2 to 7.
