Tea prices rule firm at Kochi sale

Our Bureau

Kochi July 2 Tea prices continued to rule firm amidst modest demand at the Kochi tea auctions this week.

Arrivals at the leaf auction were subdued at 2.54 lakh kg, while 12,32,000 kg of dust teas were on offer. AVT confined its purchases to good liquoring teas, while Tata Tea remained selective and Hindustan Unilever Ltd (HUL) did not participate at all.

Buying support came from the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation and loose tea traders. Clean, black and well made bolder dust grades witnessed good export enquiry at moderate and lower levels.

Nilgiri whole leaf and broken grades were dearer following quality.

Medium whole leaf grades sold at last week’s levels, while broken quoted higher and fannings prices tended to ease. Strong demand was felt from CIS, West Asia and other exporters but internal enquiries were subdued.

Fannings were mainly absorbed by tea bag exporters as well as upcountry buyers. HUL did not operate at the leaf auction either.

There was less demand for CTC leaf grades and prices fell forcing withdrawals from several sellers.

DUST PRICES

In the dust category, Pasuparai SFD fetched the top price at Rs 130 followed by Kodanad BOPD at Rs 117, Kilkotagiri BOPD at Rs 117 and Parkside BOPD at Rs 116.

LEAF PRICES

At the leaf auction Chamraj OP fetched the top price at Rs 157 followed by Sutton TGFOP at Rs 156, Havukal FOP and Curzon BOPF at Rs 154.
