Employment Info-Tech - Human Resources ‘Placements tough for new graduates’ Our Bureau Chennai, July 3 Engineering graduates coming out of colleges in calendar 2010 will face heavy competition in entering the IT software services industry, even assuming that global economic recovery is seen by the end of the current fiscal (by March 2010), says Mr S. Mahalingam, Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. “That is a problem we have to address,” he said, in response to a question on the prospects for the classes of 2009 and 2010. Two-year issueEven if the economic recovery happens in a year from now, he said, companies would tend to pick the cream among the students, whether they have graduated now and awaiting induction or slated to graduate by June 2010. “So, the problem of adequate placements would be a two-year issue.” He added that typically, the acceptance to offer-letter ratio in the Indian IT industry (which has been roughly 3.5:5) would rise, given the scramble for jobs in India and the competition in US universities for admissions. “That would also have a ripple effect downstream, in terms of placement.” This would mean that students with less than desirable credentials, who might have quickly gained employment earlier, may not find entry that easy now. He was speaking to journalists before addressing students at the Dr MGR Educational and Research Institute University on IT career opportunities organised by the Computer Society of India.
