NHPC’s Teesta power station to be dedicated today

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, July 3 The Union Minister for Power, Mr Sushil Kumar Shinde, will be dedicating to the nation the NHPC’s 510 MW Teesta Stage V hydroelectric power station at Balutar, East Sikkim on Saturday.

The above NHPC power station has been fully commissioned on March last year with all its units of 170 MW each going operational making it one of the largest power stations in the North-East region.

The Minister will be dedicating the station during a brief function at Balutar, about 60 km away from the State Capital. The Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling, and his Cabinet ministers will also be present on the occasion along with a host of State Government officials, it is informed.

It may be recalled that NHPC had commissioned the Teesta Stage V power station last year.

This mega hydroelectric project has been commissioned in the shortest possible time in spite of many geological problems and vagaries of nature such as flood in Teesta River, landslides and unforeseen geological surprises experienced in dam, tunnel, surge shaft and dam abutment etc.

Cost of project

The cost of the Teesta Stage V power project was approximately Rs. 2,650 crore and the provisional tariff approved is Rs 1.62 a unit.

The beneficiaries of the project are Damador Valley Corporation, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Sikkim.
