Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Shutdown hitch
I have a P-IV system with Windows ME and 256MB of RDRAM.I have gone in for a Satyam Net connection. Whenever I shut down my system, it gives me the message "windows protection error, restart your computer." Then I have to restart my computer. Also, every time it does the memory test only after which I am able to shut down the system properly. The problem appears to get solved when I reinstall Windows ME. But within one or two weeks, it resurfaces. What is causing this problem? Should I reinstall the OS frequently? Please suggest a solution. Ramathilagam Chinnayan There have been a number of issues regarding "windows protection errors" in both Windows ME and Windows 98. This specific symptom could possibly occur when you are running a McAfee or Norton anti-virus program that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your computer. To set right this hitch, please configure your anti-virus program not to scan floppy disk drives when you shut down your computer. And about reinstalling the OS, you can do it as many times as you want as long as you don't get tired doing it. The installation does give some extra work to the HDD and the processor but this does not cause any damage as such.
