Letters Thought-provoking
Sir, This is with reference to the article "Blocking Progress" in eWorld dated October 9, 2002. The article, written by G. Rambabu, on how the foresightedness of the National Highways Authority of India in planning to lay telecom ducts while executing the Prime Minister's pet highway project "Golden Quadrilateral" has been set aside by certain quarters, is timely and thought-provoking. It calls to mind a very big problem that we as a nation are facing today - sharing of national resources. India, an agrarian economy, would have been strengthened decades ago if only suggestions by former statesmen to link rivers and canals across the country had been implemented. We would not be facing disputes over Cauvery and the like today, had such wise advice been adhered to then. What is lacking is public awareness on such projects and the benefits they can bring to the nation. The media must invite comments from the public and forward worthy suggestions to the Prime Minister's office so that at least in future, the nation's long-term interests are protected. R. Krishnamurthy, Chennai
