Computer Usage Columns - Tip Off Hitch in running MS-DOS software
We have one new IBM system Pentium 4, 1.80 GHz 128 MB of RAM with Windows XP as OS. It is not able to run DOS-based softwarewhich runs in two other PCs (OS Windows 98) without any problem. While opening the programme with the new machine, an error message appears: "Too many files open cancel or ignore." We are instructed by the programmers to copy the CONFIG.SYS file from the other computer, which causes the problem. But our problem persists. Is it hardware or software-related? Please suggest a solution. Yogi Enterprises One can generally increase the `FILES' settings value in the Config.sys file to increase the number of files handled and thus solve the problem you have outlined in your query. However, in Windows XP, the settings used by MS-DOS-based programs are not set using the Config.sys file. Therefore changing this value will have no effect. However, you can edit the Config.nt file in the system32 folder. You will find the FILES=entry (if not just add FILES=200). This will change the settings for all your DOS sessions. You can also change the settings of a given DOS session by editing the properties of its shortcut. To do this, please select `Program' and click `Advanced.' There you can enter the specific Config and Autoexec files.
