Software Review Columns - Netting a Catch Tools for images
This week, the focus is on tools for the image junkie. The tools help you process your image collection with a host of techniques. Most of the programs listed here are freeware. JPEG Resizer JPEG Resizer is a smart photo-resizing program that enables you to quickly resize a selection of JPEG files. It offers several different resizing methods to choose from and can automatically recognise image sizes to calculate the best fit. You can also override Smart Resizing and resize your images so that all of them have the same width or height or specified dimensions. The resulting files can be automatically renamed with a uniform prefix and an incremental number.

GiFFY GiFFY is a small utility that can convert .bmp files to .gif format and vice-versa. It can create transparent, non-transparent, interlaced, and non-interlaced GIFs. Giffy integrates into the Windows Explorer right-click menu and can also run from the command line.

Mihov Image Resizer Mihov Image Resizer is a handy tool for batch resizing images in bmp, gif, and jpg formats. The program allows you to enlarge or reduce the dimensions of any picture. The reduced version of the picture is named mini-.. in order to make sure that you are not overwriting the original. In addition, the program offers to convert between formats (gif to jpg, jpg to gif, bmp to gif). Mihov Image Resizer is also a useful utility to create thumbnails and provides an easy-to-use, tabbed interface.

InstaCropper InstaCropper is an image processing utility that crops unnecessary parts of images automatically. It is useful for cleaning up scanned images, electronic documents and captured images without the help of full-featured image editing software. Its main function is to crop backgrounds automatically. This automatic cropping is available either by the batch process or by the interactive method. Manual cropping allows users to rotate and crop an individual image simply and easily by the manual method. InstaCropper supports jpg, bmp, tga image file formats for input and output. Additional features include image rotation, window resizing, outward edge crop and crop width selection.

CopyRightLeft This is a small program that allows you to add copyright text to your images. You can either add the copyright note to the bottom of your pictures or overlay it. The appearance of the copyright note can be completely customised in size, position and colour. The program also supports batch processing with automated date adjustments. It works with bmp, gif, jpeg, pcx, png, pnm, tga and tif formats.

GIF Colour Mapper GIF Colour Mapper provides quick changing colours in the palettes of a number of gif files. It provides the ability to change the design or colour scheme of your Web Site in a jiffy, processing single or multiple files. For added convenience, it comes with a built-in colour picker to capture desired colours both for source and destination.

Vikar JPEG ReSizer JPEG ReSizer allows you to give your JPEG images a new dimension and save the results at a destination folder. The source folder may contain any sub-folders, in which case the program will mirror the directory structure in the destination folder. You can easily create thumbnails of your images, setting the new dimensions and reduce the file sizes by setting a jpeg compression value. The program also allows you to run the resizing process in the background.
