● An RSS man, formerly with Allahabad University, Tripathi was appointed as vice-chancellor in November 2014. In a conflict of interest, the Search-cum-Selection committee, which recommended his candidature, included old associate and RSS icon Madan Mohan Malaviya’s grandson Justice (retd) Giridhar Malaviya.
Reportedly ignoring IIT-BHU’s list of candidates, the HRD ministry also appointed Tripathi as chairperson of the institute.
● After the V-C appointment, Tripathi is reported to have visited the Kal Bhairav temple, Kashi Vishwanath temple and the Vishwanath temple on campus. According to reports, the V-C has also asked students to go vegan and consume non-vegetarian food outside the campus. A professor of economics, a Google scholar search reveals no publications, citations or papers to his name.
● In June 2015, at the International Conference for Communal Harmony and Nation building, organised by the Students of Islamic Organisation and the political science department at BHU, Tripathi, in a five-minute address, echoed RSS and VHP intellectuals, saying, “The planet is a family. Our way of life is prescribed by sarve bhavantu sukhinah and vasudhaiva kutumbakam .”
