JSW Energy may enter power distribution

NEW DELHI: Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Energy on Friday said it is exploring opportunities in the power distribution sector to diversify the company’s business.

“We are evaluating opportunities in electricity distribution, we will enter the market through the franchisee route,” a senior company official said.

JSW Energy is currently engaged in generation, transmission and trading of electricity and is eyeing electricity distribution in the western region, as it has power projects in those areas. The company plans to evacuate power from its generating stations through its transmission lines and further distribute it.

“We would like to synergise our power generation projects in the western region with the distribution network,” he said.

The company plans to become a 11,500 MW company by 2015 , of which 7,740 MW is under construction, including 860 MW project in Vijaynagar (Karnataka) and 130 MW project in Barmer (Rajasthan).

The company also plans to set up a 3,200 MW power plant using supercritical or energy efficient technology at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. The current power generation capacity of the company is 800 MW. - PTI
