Corporate Simbhaoli to import 2 lakh tonnes raw sugar NEW DELHI: Simbhaoli Sugars is planning to import two lakh tonnes of raw sugar this season for processing and sale in the domestic market amid fears of a shortage in supply. “We plan to contract two lakh tonnes of raw sugar in the current season (October-September),” Simbhaoli Director (Finance), Mr Sanjay Tapriya said. The company has already imported 1.4 lakh tonnes of raw sugar since July and the delivery of another 80,000 tonnes is expected by the end of the next month, he added. The refining programme is a part of the company's business plan to meet domestic sugar deficit and improve its capacity utilisation. India's sugar production is estimated at 160 lakh tonnes this season against annual demand of 235 lakh tonnes. Mr Tapriya said out of 1.4 lakh tonnes of imported raw sugar, the company has already processed about one lakh tonnes in the last season, ending September. Simbhaoli's sugar production from domestic sugarcane is also expected to increase to 1.6 lakh tonnes in the current season from 1.5 lakh tonnes in the previous one, he said. - PTI
