Agri-Business Maharashtra's research institute in race for global award MUMBAI: Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI) in western Maharashtra is in race for the Globe Sustainability Research Award for the year 2009. The award, one of four categories of the international prize, is given for original research which contributes to increased knowledge on sustainability. Besides NARI, based in Phaltan, Satara district, four others are in race for the coveted honour. The finalist will be given the award on June 3 by Swedish Crown Princess Victoria in Sweden, a release from Stockholm said. The institute has developed a light source that runs on locally produced fuel, is environmentally friendly and produces light equivalent to a 100 watts electric bulb. This lantern also doubles up as a cooking stove thereby solving the twin problems of co oking and lighting for rural households, the release said. The award recognises innovative and outstanding contributions to advance economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development, said Mohan Munasinghe, Chairman of the jury for the best Sustainable Research and Vice-Chairman of UN Inter governmental Panel on Climate Change. - PTI
