VADODARA: Bharatiya Kisan Sangh in Amreli has supported the farmers' demand for fixing the minimum support price (MSP) for cotton at Rs 500 per 20 kg and not less than that. Sangh secretary Mansukh Bhai has demanded suspension of licence of those cotton dealers refusing to buy cotton at minimum support price of Rs 500 per 20 kg.

Reports of farmers disrupting auction in marketing yards at Amreli, Bagasara and other places were received. Farmers said the auction would not be allowed if buyers fail to accept their demand for payment of minimum amount of Rs 500.

However, buyers in the marketing yard said it is not possible for them to concede the demand of minimum payment as the farmers are not ready to consider other factors which force them not to concede the demand. Though the State is expected to record bum per cotton crop this year, farmers are worried that the present market prices, which are at about Rs 350 per 20 kg and lower than international prices, and high cost of production will spell heavy losses. Because of this, farmers have been disrupting au ction at marketing yards in Saurashtra demanding fixing the support price at Rs 500 per 20 kg. - PTI
