MALDA (WB) Feb 23 To increase the annual yield of famous mangoes of Malda, old mango trees are being rejuvenated in the groves of Malda district in West Bengal. The Horticulture Officer of the district, Mr Samarendra Khanra said, "For the first time, Rs 5.72 crore has been sanctioned for scientific rejuvenation of old trees and creation of groves having early variety of mangoes in the district."

Horticulture experts recently visited here to train the mango cultivators for better crop production. Nearly half of the mango trees in Malda district are old and the yield of fruit is declining every year for want of proper care.

The district economy is heavily dependent on mango cultivation with annual turnover of more than Rs 200 crore. Mangoes are grown in 25,900 hectares spread over 15 blocks in the district.

Eight of these blocks have been identified as 'Mango-rich', with maximum yield being reported from Englishbazar block. - PTI
