India to export sugar to Kazakhstan

NEW DELHI: India plans to export raw sugar to Kazakhstan as sugarcane growers and mills in the world's second-biggest producer of the sweetener face declining prices in the wake of record output.

''Kazakhstan has requested India to export raw sugar immediately to contain the prices of foodstuff,'' an official release said here on Tuesday.

It said India recorded an unprecedented harvest of sugarcane this year and is ready to export extra sugar to countries, which are in need. In 2006-07 season, India produced 282 lakh tonnes of sugar. Maharashtra produced 90.8 lakh tonnes, while Uttar Pradesh's sugar output stood at 85.3 lakh tonnes. Karnataka and Tamil Nadu produced 26.5 lakh tonnes and 24.5 lakh tonnes respectively.

According to a US Department of Agriculture report, sugar production in India is estimated to grow by 3.9 per cent at a record 293 lakh tonnes in 2007-08 against 282 lakh tonnes last season.

Major commodities of export from India to Kazakhstan include tea, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, machinery, tobacco, valves and consumer items. - PTI
