Commodities Tea output, export dip in Sept'09 KOLKATA: India's tea production in September 2009 was down at 101.46 million kg mainly due to fall in output in Dooars and Terai regions of West Bengal, Tea Board data released on Thursday said. Tea production stood at 107.01 million kg in September last year, it said. However, in September 2009 tea output dipped by 19 per cent to 19.16 million kg in Dooars and Terai regions of West Bengal. The Board added that tea export from the country fell during September to 18.47 million kg from 19.53 million kg in the year-ago period. The output stood at 696.72 million kg between January and September this year, against 706.74 million kg in the corre sponding period in 2008. Production in Assam, which accounts for over half of the country's total tea output, though declined in September at 55.60 million kg, but it is still more than last year as far as January-September data are concerned. Assam produced 359.60 million kg between January and September, against 356.73 million kg in the same period in 2008. From January to September tea export was at 131.22 million kg, down from 150.25 million kg, it said. Even though the export quantity has declined, exporters have realised better price in international market this year, leading to a jump in shipment in terms of value. The average export price rose to Rs 139.76 a kg in September 2009 from Rs 132.47 in Sep tember 2008. - PTI
