Commodities Crop production likely to go up by 2.2% in FY-09, says CMIE MUMBAI: Total agriculture crop production is projected to increase by 2.2 per cent at 228.8 million tons during FY-09 after rising by 4.1 per cent in the previous year. The growth rate would be a tad lower than the 2.3 per cent increase projected in the previous year, the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) said in its monthly review hereon. "The substantial upward revision in almost all the crop production figures for FY-08 as per the third advance estimate warrants a relook at the projections for FY-09,'' the CMIE report said. At 228.8-million tons, foodgrain production was slated to increase marginally by 0.6 per cent compared with the impressive increase of 4.3 per cent during FY 08. Non-food crop production index is projected to rise by 4.1 per cent, the report said. Rice production is projected to rise marginally to 96 million tons during FY-09 from 95.7 million tons in FY-08. Wheat output is likely to be around 77 million tons, pulses production is projected to increase by 1.4 million tons to 15.4 million tons. O ilseeds output is projected to increase by 5.4 per cent during FY-09 from 29.3 million tons. It rose by 14.2 per cent in the previous year, it said. Production of sugarcane is placed higher at 350 million tons from 344 million tons during FY-08. Cotton production is also projected to rise by 7.8 per cent to 25 million bales during FY 09. - PTI
