Delhi Metro launches co-branded credit card with Citibank

NEW DELHI: Delhi Metro on Wednesday tied up with Citibank to launch a co-branded credit card that will double up as an access card for users of the transport system and also provide them with some other benefits.

The "2-in-1" transit card combines the benefits of the Metro smart card with the advantages of a credit card, Mr P S Jayakumar, Country Business Manager, Citi India said here.

It is the first credit card that doubles up as a contact-less access card for Delhi Metro stations, allowing users 'tap and go entry', he said.

In addition, the card also offers other benefits, including exclusive shopping deals and discounts, fuel surcharge waivers at Indian oil outlets and other privileges.

On the customer acquisition through the agreement, Mr Jayakumar said about two lakh Metro commuters could become card users. Citigroup has about 36 lakh credit card users in the country, he said.

Currently, there are over 7.5 lakh commuters who use the Metro smart card, of which 3.5 lakh passengers use it on a daily basis.

Mr Raj Kumar, Director (Operations), DMRC said, "We are in talks with the Delhi Government to extend the reach of the card to city buses."

He said talks are at a preliminary stage and if the proposal comes through, the same card could be used for traveling by buses, he said. - PTI
