CCTL asks feeder operators to withdraw congestion surcharge

CHENNAI: Chennai Container Terminal Ltd (CCTL) has asked the Chennai Feeder Operators to withdraw immediately or defer by a week its decision to impose a congestion surcharge of $50/TEU from today.

The P&O Ports-run terminal CCTL, which is witnessing a go-slow by workers, said in a statement that it has witnessed more than average cargo movement in the last two days with no congestion at the terminal either.

It said CCTL has handled 1,300 QC (Quay crane) moves per day in the last two days. ''This amounts to approximately 1,700 TEUs (twenty equivalent units) per day and 51,000 TEUs per month, which is more than the normal throughput that Chennai handles,'' it said.

Expressing its ''shock'' over the announcement by CFO to impose an immediate surcharge of $50/TEU with effect from today, CCTL's chief operating officer Ennarasu Karunesan said ''this will cause hardship to the trade.''

''CCTL has requested the CFO to withdraw the announcement of congestion surcharge or at least defer it for a period of one more week,'' he said. - PTI
