Buddhadev unhappy over BIMSTEC move

KOLKATA: West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadev Bhattacharjee on Monday expressed unhappiness over the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) move to explore the possibility of setting up a deep sea por t at Chittagong in Bangladesh.

Under the Bay of Bengal initiative, the proposed Chittagong deep sea port would erode away the viability of a similar one in West Bengal since the former would be closer to countries in the south-east Asian region.

At the national executive meet of FICCI here, Mr Bhattacharjee said the state government was keen to set up a deep sea port in West Bengal, which was awaiting final approval of the shipping ministry.

He said he would discuss the matter with External Affairs Minister, Mr Pranab Mukherjee.

“If required, I will talk to the Prime Minister,'' he said.

On other issues, he said the Singur and Nandigram episodes had sent wrong messages to the outside world.

The Chief Minister said the state government was keen on formulating a land acquisition policy and farmers should be given remunerative prices. - PTI
