WASHINGTON: Pro-India Democrat Mr Joseph Biden, the running mate of US President-elect Mr Barack Obama, on Wednesday won his seventh consecutive Senate term which he is not expected to serve in view of his election as Vice President.

The 65-year-old veteran Delaware Democrat defeated Republican Ms Christine O'Donnell in the little-noticed Senate race, securing 65 per cent votes against 35 per cent polled by his rival.

Mr Biden, having won the Vice Presidency also, is expected to vacate his Senate seat and allow outgoing Delaware Governor Mr Ruth Ann Minner or Democratic Governor-elect Mr Jack Markell to name his successor.

The possible successors of Mr Biden, the Chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee, include his son, state Attorney General Mr Joseph R ‘Beau' Biden III.

Mr Biden was first elected to Senate in 1972, becoming the fifth-youngest Senator in US history. He was re-elected to the Senate in 1978, 1984, 1990, 1996 and 2002. – PTI
