GCC plans regional nuclear training centre

DUBAI: The six-member Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) plans to establish a regional nuclear training centre as part of their efforts to tap atomic power and diversify energy sources. Under this representatives from the GCC which comprises six countries na mely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and UAE are meeting in Qatar's capital, Doha to discuss various strategies to establish a regional nuclear training centre, a news report has said.

The workshop is organised by the Qatari Ministry of Environment in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and experts in the field of nuclear energy, official Qatar News Agency (QNA) said.

GCC and IAEA had previously reached an agreement to carry out three projects over the next two years, including establishing a training centre in the field for GCC nationals. The other two projects are on the use of nuclear energy for generating electric ity and looking into the legal and structural frameworks for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the GCC, the QNA said adding that these two projects are designed to assure the launching of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and determine its extent of use in the GCC states.

Meanwhile, UAE has stressed its interest in developing a program for the peaceful use of nuclear energy that stems from its desire to meet its growing needs of energy in future. Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, UAE's foreign mi nister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has said, “We are confident that this (peaceful nuclear programme) will provide an opportunity for making a positive change in the international arena.” - PTI
