Brown govt takes up Goa property issue with Delhi

LONDON: The Gordon Brown government has responded to growing concerns of hundreds of British citizens facing problems while acquiring property in Goa by raising the issue with New Delhi and the state government in Goa.

Responding to a petition signed by over 450 British citizens, the Brown government said it had raised the matter ‘as a matter of concern’ with authorities in New Delhi and Goa.

Many British citizens have reported facing problems purchasing and registering property in Goa. In its response, the Brown government said, “We have made clear to the state authorities in Goa that we would be extremely concerned if there were to be any question of property acquired legally by British nationals being expropriated through the retrospective application of any new legislation.”

“We have also raised this as a matter of concern with the Indian government in Delhi. We will continue to pursue this issue with the Indian authorities both in Goa and in Delhi”.

Stating that the issue was complex, the official statement added, “The Goan Government has said that it introduced the legislation to address the problem of the illegal purchase of land by foreign nationals in the state, not to prevent foreigners buying and owning property in Goa”. - PTI
