Japan commits Rs 8,582 crore for 9 infra projects

NEW DELHI: Japan has committed to give India Rs 8,582 crore as assistance for developing nine infrastructure projects.

The assistance will help in undertaking infrastructure projects, including Kolkata metro project, Hogennakal water supply project and Tamil Nadu urban infrastructure project, an official release said on Friday.

The phase-II of the Delhi metro project will also be funded by Japan. This is the highest-ever official development assistance by the Japanese government to India. Negotiations on infrastructure projects such as Dedicated Freight Corridor, Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor have already been started between both the Government.

The two countries, the release stated, have also agreed to have a bilateral currency swap agreement to meet any short-term liquidity crisis, which marks a major step in strengthening economic relation between the two countries.

India and Japan have set up forums such as High Level Policy Dialogue on Economic Development and India-Japan Strategic Dialogue on Economic Issues that will hold discussions annually, the release added. - PTI
