General Address issue of skills development, says Raja CHENNAI: Expressing concern over candidates failing to meet the industry's burgeoning expectations, the Union IT and Communications Minister, Mr A Raja on Saturday asked industry and institutes to draw a road map to address the issue of skills developmen t. Launching 'Virtuosity', a skill building institute, developed by the technology innovations company Afflatus iLabs, here, he voiced concern over the 'long gulf' between academic curriculum and industry's expectations. “Industries and institutes should draw a roadmap on the areas needed for skill development and present it to the government for taking up the issue”, he said. He said IT sector was growing in a tremendous way as there was considerable increase in the FDI inflows and needs of the industry's expectations for employable candidates should be satisfied by means of providing requisite skills training. On the National Council on Skill Development which was set up by the Centre last year and chaired by the Prime Minister, Mr Manmohan Singh under which 50,000 skill centres are to be set up in the country, he hoped that these centres would have the salien t features as required by industry so that candidates would have necessary skills for employability. He said though an Information and Communication Technology Academy to train youths for ICT jobs was set up last year, the government by itself cannot address the issue of skills development and industry and institutes should join hands. - PTI
