Common currency would push trade among SAARC nations

AMRITSAR: Stressing upon the proposed common currency, like Euro among the SAARC nations, Goodwill ambassador to UNESCO, Mr Madanjit Singh said that it will serve as an anchor of economic stability that would accelerate trade and commerce among the south Asian countries.

“It is generally acknowledged that during the recent worldwide economic meltdown, it was the Euro that saved the European Union from further economic crisis. SAARC countries will also benefit from the centripetal forces created by the proposed common cur rency, like the Euro,” Mr Singh said.

He was addressing South Asia Foundation Peace Festival 2009 organised here being held from October 14 to 23. A union would promote trade and commerce among the south Asian countries and become an important component of South Asia's collective security, s aid Mr Singh. - PTI
