General CCI acting Chairman Vinod Dhall quits NEW DELHI: Acting Chairman of the Competition Commission of India (CCI), Mr Vinod Dhall has put in his papers seeking an early exit, four months ahead of his term, which was coming to an end by mid-October. "I am seeking a bit of early exit. All work has been completed and I will be continuing in office for next week to complete whatever is remaining," Mr Dhall said. He also denied the speculation that he was quitting because of differences with the Minister of Corporate Affairs Mr Premchand Gupta. Mr Dhall, who was working as secretary in the then Ministry of Company Affairs, joined the Commission, as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in July 2003 and later became its member-administration. His resignation, according to sources, would be forwarded to the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) for necessary action. During his tenure as the head of the Commission, Mr Dhall has completed the necessary groundwork for functioning of the watchdog body, which could not become fully operational because of Supreme Court directives. The Commission, following amendments to the Act by Parliament, is likely to become fully operational by the end of 2008. As part of the advocacy campaign, Mr Dhall took several initiatives and called meetings of various industry bodies to educate them about the competition practices and provisions of the Act. - PTI
