The Hindu Business Line : 'Strike not to affect bus services in TN'

CHENNAI: As the ruling DMK affiliated Labour Progressive Front (LPF) extended its support to tomorrow's nation-wide general strike by several central trade unions to protest against rising inflation and prices, Tamil Nadu Transport Minister, Mr K N Nehru on Tuesday clarified the LPF had only offered 'moral support' and bus services would not be hit.

Mr Nehru, in a statement here, said the LPF had only extended its moral support to the strike and there would not be any strike in the transport corporations. All government buses would ply as usual.

LPF had recently announced its support to the strike in a joint statement, along with the CITU and AITUC among others. In October last, the DMK government faced widespread allegations of disruption of transport services during the state-sponsored bandh o n the Sethusamudram project row.

The Supreme Court recently threatened to issue arrest warrants against Chief Minister, Mr M Karunanidhi and Union Shipping Minister, Mr T R Baalu for non-compliance of its directives on a contempt petition by AIADMK General Secretary, Ms Jayalalithaa for going ahead with the October 1 bandh despite the apex court restraining it.

Mr Karunanidhi, however, blamed state counsels handling the case for the delay and sacked them. - PTI
