Govt's education initiatives to be reviewed

NEW DELHI: The government's thrust on expansion, excellence and equity in education will come under the scanner with the Planning Commission proposing to undertake a mid-term review of the initiatives started in the 11th Plan.

The government had set several targets, including achieving 15 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education, in the 11th Plan ending 2012. Accordingly, there was a sharp increase in the allocation of funds for the sector in the 11th Plan, which ha s been often described as an education plan by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh.

“Now we are at mid point of the 11th Plan. It is time to make a review of the progress made under these initiatives to provide education with focus on access, quality and inclusiveness,” Planning Commission member Prof Narendra Jadhav said.

The mid-term review, which will start by next month, is expected to be completed by November this year. “The thrust of the review will be to find out how far the government has proceeded in its effort to expand education system in the country. We will st udy the areas of weakness and suggest measures to overcome them,” he said.

The gross budgetary support for education has been increased from 7.7 per cent in the 10th Plan to 19 per cent in the 11th Plan. - PTI
