Meridian Mobile targets to sell 30 lakh handsets this fiscal

MUMBAI: Meridian Mobile, Indian subsidiary of UK-based Meridian Technologies, on Thursday said it aims to sell 30 lakh handsets in the country in the current fiscal.

The company, which claims to have six per cent market share of the GSM handset industry has no plans to start manufacturing handsets here and will continue to import from the Korean facility of the parent company.

"The market is growing very fast and there is a demand for good and quality handsets in India. We have set a target of selling 30 lakh handsets in the current fiscal in India," Mr Rajiv Khanna, Chief Executive Officer (Indian Operations) of the company s aid here.

The turnover of the company is also expected to zoom past Rs 1,000-crore mark in the current fiscal from Rs 200 crore for the fiscal ended March 31, 2008.

"Our brand 'Fly' has a six per cent market share in total GSM handset industry market in India. This is going to increase with lots of new launches we have in mind in the days to come," Mr Khanna said.

Meridian Mobile sells 31 handset models in the Indian market and has recently launched 'Hummer Mobile' ranges aiming at the youth segment. "There will be another launch in the 'Hummer Mobile' range soon. We are also readying to launch third generation handsets as and when decks are cleared for it," Mr Khanna said. - PTI
