Nikon to hire more in India

NEW DELHI: Camera and digital imaging products major Nikon India on Thursday said it will be increasing headcount this year in India besides enhancing sales distribution to expand its operations in the country.

“We are completely opposite to the layoff trend that is happening right now. We will be hiring more people as we have added two more branches last year. Besides, as we increase our outlets, we need around 200 more in-shop demonstrators which we are plann ing to hire,” Nikon India Managing Director, Mr Hidehiko Tanaka said.

He said the company would increase its number of outlets to around 1,500 across the country from the present 800 stores, including the shop-in-shops.

“Our aim is to increase the market share in both SLR and compact camera segments to 45 per cent and 10 per cent respectively in the Indian market by the end of this year,” he said.

At present, he said the company has 35 per cent market share in SLR segment and five per cent in the compact camera market and intends to launch more products.

“We will be continuously launching more products. Despite the market condition, we will not slowdown our work in bringing out more products,” he said.

While the company sold about 1.2 million units in the country, it plans to increase it by 30 per cent this year.

At present, Nikon has eight SLR models, including newly launched D3X, and 16 in the compact camera portfolio priced between Rs 8000 and Rs 5.25 lakh. It had hiked prices by 5 to 10 per cent in November. - PTI
