Nikon eyes 45% share in digital SLR market

NEW DELHI: Nikon India, the wholly owned subsidiary of Japanese camera major Nikon Corporation, is looking at garnering a 45 per cent share in the Indian digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera market by 2010.

The company, which has a 37 per cent share in the 12,000 unit Indian digital SLR market, is also planning to strengthen its service centres and increase dealership network in the country.

“The Indian digital SLR camera market is of 12,000 units (2008 figures) and growing at 25 per cent annually. We have at present a 37 per cent share in it and our aim is to grow and have at least 45 per cent share by 2010,” Nikon India Managing Director, Mr Hidehiko Tanaka said here on the sidelines of a company event.

He, however, refused to share any investment plans by the company for the Indian market.

“We are also putting more emphasis on increasing our service activities. This would also mean increasing the number of our service centres from the existing 18, although we have not yet fixed any numbers,” Mr Tanaka said.

Asked about the company's plans for introducing more models, he said: “We are always working on bringing in new models and would continue to do so.”

The company today introduced its new 12.3 Mega pixel D5000 camera priced at Rs 48,950-Rs 55,950. - PTI
