Variety Indians will connect with melodrama in 'the Tudors': Hirst NEW DELHI: Mr Michael Hirst, scriptwriter of Emmy award-winning period drama “The Tudors” hopes that Indian audiences will connect with the inherent “melodrama,” of the show which is based on the life of British king Henry VIII. “The Tudors” starring “Bend It Like Beckham” star Johnathan Rhys Meyers as young King Henry VIII, is premiering on FOX History & Entertainment channel in India on March 27. “I firmly believe (having spent a long time in the company of Shekhar Kapur and Ismail Merchant) that the Indian audience will respond warmly to the show's inherent melodrama,” said Mr Hirst, who is also the co-producer of the show, said in an email interview. Mr Hirst, who wrote the script for Shekhar Kapur's “Elizabeth”, said that the Indian director inspired him to make his characters full of emotions and life. “It was Shekhar who actually taught me not to be afraid of melodrama. It is almost a dirty word i n my culture, but for me it was liberating to write about the emotional, spiritual and sensual lives of my characters,” said Mr Hirst. The scriptwriter said that he wanted the audiences to get involved with the story. “want the audience to care about what happens to my characters...even the bad ones,” he said. - PTI
