Puducherry to export rice to France

Puducherry: The Puducherry Agro Services and Industries corporation (PASIC) is all set to commence export of non-Basmati rice to France in view of demand for it. The state-owned corporation had obtained the necessary licence from the government and to st art with 100 tonnes of rice would be sent to France in the next one month, official sources said here on Friday.

They said there had been requests from French nationals of Indian origin, particularly from Puducherrty, a former French colony, for the non-Basmati variety. Earlier, newly appointed chairman of PASIC Mr A Elumalai, MLA, who assumed charge today, announc ed the corporation's plan to export rice.

He told reporters here that the corporation was working out the modalities for exporting rice. He also said the corporation would import cement from Malaysia and a few other countries to ensure that it was available to the public at reasonable price.

He said the mineral water produced by PASIC was being exported to Malaysia and Singapore among other countries. It had received good recognition all over the country and abroad. The PASIC had netted Rs 1.5 crores through sale of mineral water during the year.

At present, the corporation was producing 24 lakh bottles of water annually and this would be increased to 36 lakhs soon, Mr Elumalai said. The corporation would also sell through retail outlets rice at reasonable price, he said. Mr Elumalai said PASIC h ad achieved a business turn over of Rs 57 crores during this year and this would be doubled in 2009-2010 fiscal. - PTI
