The Hindu Business Line : Gujarat govt evades queries on incentives to Tata

When the Minister of State for Industries, Mr Saurabh Patel on Monday announced the new industrial policy in a press conference, there were flurry of questions pertaining to the incentives given to the Tata's car project, which was relocated from Singur in West Bengal to Sanand near Ahmedabad.

Media persons sought to know from the minister if the similar package of incentives would be offered to any other industrial project. However, despite repeated questions, both minister Mr Saurabh Patel and industries secretary, Mr Maheshwar Sahu parried the questions refusing to be engaged in the discussions.

Finally, to counter the flow of queries, Mr Patel called off the conference asking journalists to join him for lunch. It may be noted that a confidential document believed to be the incentives package offered to the Nano car project was leaked to the med ia in last November.

The state government so far has maintained a silence on the issue without either confirming or denying the authenticity of the document. However, the state industry department has denied to disclose information under Right to Information Act (RTI) regard ing the benefits offered to the Tata group for shifting Nano car to Gujarat.

The industry department has categorised it as “secret business deal” between the government and the corporate house, which cannot be parted with. - PTI
