Govt/States Heavy rains ruin crops in Andhra Pradesh HYDERABAD: Heavy rains in five districts of Andhra Pradesh over the last three days have left a trail of destruction, having damaged crops in over 600 hectares and causing losses to local farmers. According to preliminary estimates, no human loss has been reported in any of the districts. The Chief Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting here on Monday and directed the authorities concerned to be on alert despite the low-pressure area moving away towards Lakshadweep. Briefing reporters after the meeting, the Agriculture Minister, Mr N. Raghuveera Reddy, and the Major Irrigation Minister, Mr Ponnala Lakshmaiah, said horticulture crops, including vegetables, were damaged in 80 hectares while 56 cattle died due to heavy rains in these districts. Jaladanki Mandal in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district received the highest 50 cm of rainfall followed by 40 cm in Kavali town. Nellore town received 26.8 cm of rain. In Prakasam, Chittoor, Anantapur and Kadapa districts as well there was heavy downpour but the destruction was very less, the Ministers said. In Nellore, 300 houses collapsed while roads (both Roads and Buildings Department and Panchayat Raj Department) suffered breaches at 325 points. As many as 40 major tanks and 200 canals also suffered breaches. — PTI
