Govt/States
Orissa power body for standard load shedding protocol

in the State, a public notice by the Orissa Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) said.

The power situation in the State had deteriorated as its hydro reservoirs considered the backbone of the power supply system were depleted. The thermal power stations were also not able to deliver at their full potential due to factors like non-availabi lity of coal, the notice said.

The situation had compounded as the 13 independent power producers who were supposed to have started operation by this time had failed to come up due to problems like land acquisition, it said.

Stating that the power tariff in Orissa was low compared to other States, OERC said the consumers in the State might not be able to afford to pay the price if the Government purchased power from other sources at high price to meet the deficiency.

“In this scenario, it is inevitable that there is need for demand management in the use of energy by all categories of consumers including industrial consumers in the State,’’' the OERC said and sought views from different quarters on how to manage the s ituation. — PTI
