Strike affects normal life in Manipur

IMPHAL: Normal life in parts of the city was affected due to the indefinite bandh called by the locals here to protest the killing of a student and a football player by security personnel last week.

Markets, shops and cinema halls in the city remained shut. Inter-state transport services were also disrupted. All major government offices, however witnessed the full attendance, officials said.

Hundreds of local residents of New Lambulane under the banner of Joint Action Committee launched a sit-in protest yesterday. The Committee led by Manipur Food and Civil Supply Minister Y Erabot demanded strict action against security men involved in the killing of a LMS law college student, Thangtinsei Kipgen (29) and a football player Bertneo Hangsin (23) here.

A JAC spokesman said the protestors demand a constitution of judicial enquiry and suspension of the commandos from service.

Earlier, official sources had said the two youths who hailed from New Lambulane here were killed in an encounter with combined forces of police commandos and personnel of 115th Border Security Force battalion at Tinsid area in Imphal East district on Fri day last. - PTI
