KANPUR: IIT-Kanpur is all set to start its own FM radio station which will broadcast scientific programmes and classical music from November. This will be the first time that an FM radio station will be opened in any of the IITs in the country.

The Information and Broadcasting Ministry has already given a green signal to the project. Frequency has been allotted for the FM station which will be on air in November. The well-equipped FM station with technical devices worth Rs 22 lakhs will initia lly go on-air only for two to three hours.

The FM station will air programmes relating to science with special emphasis on making the subject more interesting and simpler to students. The FM station will function emulating the model of America's National Public Radio(NPR).

“The radio station will function on lines of America's National Public Radio. It will incorporate educational and awareness programmes related to science, Indian classical music and the untouched fields of Indian culture,” Registrar of IIT Kanpur Mr Sanj iv Kasalkar said. - PTI
