Dairy Development Board to put wall around Aarey Colony

MUMBAI: To prevent encroachments on its property in the city, the Dairy Development Board will soon be building a security wall around the scenic Aarey Milk Colony in north west Mumbai, a senior official said.

“Aarey colony is the only green belt in western Mumbai and will soon be protected by building a concrete wall on its perimeter to prevent encroachment by squatters,” said a board official.

A sum of Rs 40 crore has already been approved for the work and construction of the wall is slated to start after the completion of monsoon, the officer added.

“Nearly 180 acres of the total 3,166 acres of land inside the colony has already been encroached by building shanties,” the officer said.

People build shanties and sell them for profit but our hands are tied as they threaten us with action under the Prevention of Atrocities Act as the encroachers consist primarily of casual labourers from the backward classes, he said.

An additional 17 acres of land inside the colony have been occupied by developers who have constructed multi-storeyed residential buildings in the property owned by the board, the official said, adding a request for action against the buildings is pendin g. - PTI
