Govt/States Hogenakkal project on schedule, says Karunanidhi CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Mr M Karunanidhi on Friday asserted that the Hogenakkal drinking water project, being opposed by Karnataka Government, would be completed by 2012 as scheduled. “The Rs 1,334 crore Hogenakkal project will be implemented as scheduled,'' he said in his Independence day address after hoisting the national flag here without directly referring to Karnataka Chief Minister, Mr B S Yeddyurappa's remarks made in Delhi th ree days ago that Tamil Nadu cannot start the project without “permission''. Mr Karunanidhi also said the two desalination plants being set up to meet the drinking water requirement of the city would be commissioned soon. Opposing the Hogenakkal project, Mr Yeddyurappa had also said a joint survey was required and the Karnataka Irrigation Minister was in touch with his Tamil Nadu counterpart. The project envisages provision of drinking water to over 40 lakh people in the two districts of Krishnagiri and Dharmapuri, bordering Karnataka. Tamil Nadu had earlier put on hold the project in the wake of the May assembly elections in Karnataka. After the elections were over, the state had formally started the work with the opening of the project office. - PTI
