Govt/States Package to complete PWD road works: Kerala Minister THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government was working out a package to restart works on roads and bridges undertaken by public works department (PWD) which were stopped mid-way due to cost escalation, State Finance Minister Mr T M Thomas Issac told the a ssembly on Wednesday. Government would complete the works on time bound basis and it was working out a package for the projects, Mr Issac said replying to a submission. The State Public Works Department Minister Mr Mons Joseph said due to cost escalation and land acquisition problems, work on many roads and bridges in various parts of the state have come to standstill. The government has taken a serious note of the situation. In consultation with Finance Ministry, government would find a solution to the issue, he said. The government would also consider the possibility of awarding contract on 'Escalation system' where by cost of the projects could be revised as and when prices of construction materials go up. However, this needs changes in the relevant laws and government would examine the same, he added. Taking up the matter, Mr V Surendran Pillai said with spurt in the prices of construction materials, construction works in various sectors of the state have stopped. He said contractors were not continuing the work as most works taken by them were based on an agreement signed in 2004 and price of materials prevailing then. - PTI
